Writing Military Mom’s First Contest!
Well, second if you count the “Name My Business” contest that no one won. (My husband came up with the name and he already had my book.)
This contest is for military spouses, active duty or retired. Write some of the special things you do to survive a deployment. Do you put something special in the care package? Maybe a get-together with the other families to do something different? Make homemade cards and send them each week or each day?
Whatever it is, tell me about it by leaving a comment here with a link back to your blog, if you have one. If not, just tell five friends about the contest so they can enter, too! Your entry does not have to be poetic. If you do not want to write much, just list your ideas for all of us to view.
Deadline for entries is July 1, 2009 by 5pm Eastern. This gives everyone enough time to think of their favorite deployment diversions. The winner of the best idea will receive a copy of Marc CB Maxwell’s book, SURVIVING MILITARY SEPARATION: A 365-Day Activity Guide for the Families of Deployed Personnel. It is a book filled with 365-days worth of fun activities to complete that makes separation during a deployment a little easier. It also includes space to write your thoughts and information you may want to share with your spouse when he or she comes home.
Good luck to everyone who enters. At the very least, you may get some great ideas about how to make a deployment a little easier by employing some of the creative ways my readers come up with from time to time. I look forward to reading all of your posts.

Entering the Blogosphere
I am fascinated by the whole notion of blogging. I love it, especially after realizing what a powerful tool it is for journalists and authors. With a blog, you can promote your book signings, your published articles and generally anything you want to let the public know about.
Creating a blog is easier than creating a website. Companies such as blogger, typepad and wordpress let you sign up and create your blog in only a few minutes. You choose your background, choose what categories of information you would like, then upload your first post. You can then post your calendar of classes, publicize special events, or journal your thoughts on a particular topic.
When you do begin blogging, remember to always stay on topic. I blog about military spouse issues, freelance writing and parenting. I try to stay with these three categories, though I go off topic on occasion when I feel compelled to do so. If you stay on topic, you gain readers. If you gain readers, you get assignments and sell books.

Are you going to SpouseBUZZ?
SpouseBUZZ Live is coming to Fort Bragg/Pope Air Force Base December 1st. The event is an opportunity to meet other spouses, learn more about subjects such as blogging , and enjoy a laugh or two about our shared experiences as military spouses. SpouseBUZZ Live is free and open to military spouses. I will be schlepping south for this one and would love to meet some of my readers.

With hundreds of thousands of service members deployed overseas, recognizing the daily sacrifices made by military families has never been more important.
Military.com’s Military Spouse Network
Military.com has further enhanced their site by creating a place for military spouses to get information and answers to their questions. If there is a more comprehensive site, I have not found it.
Military Spouse Magazine has launched!
Today is the launch of the print magazine’s website. It includes lots of good stuff including forums where spouses can connect with each other. Take a look! You will not be disappointed.
Stop bad dreams with Dream Caps.
I have not tried these caps, but they seem innovative for children who are going through the bad dreams stage. I am putting this up here because they are giving them away to military families until November 30th, 2007. You only pay postage, so they are worth a try.
Okay, I know it's close to the holidays and everyone is getting busier, but send me your comments. This week's question is:
How are you celebrating Thanksgiving this year?
I have to say this is one of the more fun holidays for me. I love cooking and miss having Thanksgiving at my own house, but it's certainly less work at Mom's! (Thanks, Mom!) When we were stationed at Quantico a few years ago I hosted Thanksgiving at my house. My rule has always been to bring anyone, especially if he or she is far from home and has no where else to go. This has always proved rewarding and lots of fun, but the year the corpsman piled into my house and "Ma'am'ed" me to death was probably my favorite so far. If any of you are reading, Happy Thanksgiving, gentlemen!
