Sum-sum-summertime

Isn’t it funny how summertime is supposed to be a restful, sunny time filled with pools, beaches and picnics? For those of you who work from home as freelance writers, that can be anything but the norm. Today I find myself searching in vain for sources to interview while my children are having fun at camp and daycare. I started my day having a tooth filled and am starting to wonder if that was more fun!

It seems everyone is on vacation if the voices on the outgoing voicemail messages are telling the truth. When they say, “On vacation…,” I cannot help but think of somewhere exotic when they are probably just spending a few days vegging out somewhere or cleaning out their closets.

Trust me, I am not complaining. The house is quiet, I can hear the radio, and I am heat-sensitive anyway. The truth is many of the jobs any freelance writer gets are assigned because all of the editor’s other writers are on vacation. No problem! As someone in an office told me today, “It’s the price you pay for working from home and making your own hours.”

She was preaching to the choir.

So my question today is this: Do you mind working during the summer?

You can be a freelance writer, someone who works 9 to 5 or anywhere in between. Write me and let me know how you feel about this topic. In the meantime, enjoy whatever type of day you are having. After all, it’s still summertime!

I'm a freelance writer and I'm on vacation and STILL working. My kids are playing at the beach and I'm on the laptop. It's hard to complain when I can see the ocean over the top of my screen.

I am also a freelance writer and have decided to schedule time off each summer for the next few years. My youngest is in second grade now and this summer was pure frustration for all of us. I needed to work and she needed her Mom. So next summer, I'm not working!
I'll rethink annually but for now, I'm a Mom first.
